Amane Fujimiya (藤宮 周 Fujimiya Amane) is the male protagonist of The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten. He is the next-door neighbor of Mahiru Shiina and attends the same high school as her.
Appearance[]
Amane stands at above average height and is described as a plain-looking boy with longer bangs and a pretty face, although the bangs cover and hide his features. After dolling himself up, his bangs are more lifted, his face is more pronounced, and he straightens his back. Overall, his vibe goes from a laid-back slob to someone with confidence. Before dating Mahiru, he would never go to school in his handsome form, as it is "troublesome."[3]

Amane is presented as an average boy who, prior to meeting Mahiru, was a 'slob' who never cared for himself properly. He doesn't focus on beauty only, since he thinks beauty is best to admire from afar, which caused him to not take an interest in romance at all. He is blunt, although honest, and will never act before thinking about his actions carefully and observing his surroundings. He is described by those who know him as "the type girls want to date,"[4] as he knows how to care for the other gender. Amane is also very humble, reserved, and actually quite smart, usually keeping his scores above the top 30 as one of the conditions for him living alone was to keeps his grades up.[5]
Later in the series, we find out that Amane's reserved nature came from his past, where he was used for his family's wealth. This caused the involvement of Amane's parents, and subsequently caused his transfer to his current prefecture and his life of living alone in his apartment. These events explain Amane's closed-off nature, since he is afraid to make new relationships in fear of him being used again, and was also the reason for his hesitation to become close to Mahiru. Despite all this, his kind nature remains and helps people out when they need it, such as Itsuki when they first met or Mahiru at the start of the series.
After Amane met Mahiru and established their initial relationship, he starts learning more from Mahiru about how to take care of himself, to the point where he can keep his apartment clean by himself. His kind yet bluntly honest nature remained, although his expression was gentler as he kept developing his relationship with Mahiru, something that was uncharacteristic of him.[6] They also started studying together, which also caused Amane's grades to raise higher than before.
Post-confession, Amane gained a bit more self-esteem, determined to change and become "a better match for Mahiru".[7] However, he states clearly that he's doing this to make himself feel better standing next to Mahiru, and not for Mahiru, which again emphasizes his kind nature and his undesire to hurt others. He also, unconsciously, flirts a lot more with Mahiru, even in public settings like their school.[7]
Additionally, Amane resolved himself to hold back on having sex until Mahiru's 18th birthday, in an effort to reduce any kind of possibilities of her getting pregnant or other issues. Despite Mahiru's indirect protests, this is something Amane wouldn't back down from. However, he still cuddles with her[8] and even has a sleepover once every month.[9]

Name Etymology[]
- The name Amane means "circumference, circuit, lap" (周).
- Amane's surname Fujimiya means "wisteria" (藤) (fuji) and "temple, shrine, palace" (宮) (miya).

- You may notice some confusion about this character's name when searching for stuff online (especially considering the Web Novel and fan translations of that). According to one of the main Fan translators: Amane is how Saeki-san wants the Kanji to be read, but normally it's read as Shu, and Zhou is the Chinese variant of that.
- In the anime[10], Amane's apartment number is "501". Similar to Mahiru, the number "501" is an angel number associated with the fortune of "something positive coming down your path". It is a nod to Amane being able to live next to Mahiru as his life changes for the better.
